SEO Skipton Where to start

How do I compete with Leeds businesses in Google?

Win the searches that name Skipton, Craven and the Dales, where a Leeds firm has no address, no local reviews and no good reason to be shown, and then make sure you are the obvious choice on the searches you both appear for. You will not out-link a company that has been in Leeds for twenty years, and you do not have to. This guide covers why Leeds businesses show up for Skipton searches in the first place, which searches you can realistically take from them, how the map results tilt towards the firm that is actually here, and what to do about their bigger websites.

Why do Leeds businesses appear for Skipton searches at all?

Three reasons, more often than not. Their websites are older and have more links pointing at them, which Google reads as prominence. They rank for the county-wide phrases, anything with Yorkshire in it, and those pages get shown for a Skipton search when nothing better exists. And some run a page for every town they will travel to, written from a desk in Leeds, which is thin but still more than most Skipton firms have.

So the gap is usually a missing page on your side, and a page is a far cheaper thing to fix than twenty years of links.

Which searches can a Skipton business realistically win?

The ones with a place in them that a Leeds firm cannot honestly claim. Skipton, Craven, Settle, Grassington, Ilkley, the Dales, and near me typed from within the town. Those are your home ground. The county-wide phrases are the away fixture: winnable in time for a specialist, a long slog for a generalist.

Be specific as well as local. Commercial electrician Skipton and EV charger installation Skipton are two different customers, and a page each beats one page trying to be both.

How do the map results favour the business that is actually here?

Through distance, which is one of the three factors Google publishes alongside relevance and prominence. A searcher standing on Skipton High Street, or one who typed Skipton, is shown businesses near that point first, and a Leeds address is twenty-five miles from it. A Leeds firm can add Skipton as a service area on its profile, but proximity still counts against it.

That is the one advantage size cannot buy, so make sure your profile is complete enough to use it.

What can you do about their bigger websites and review counts?

Beat them on relevance and on local proof, because those are the two you control. Relevance is a page that answers the exact Skipton question better than their general Yorkshire page does. Local proof is reviews from customers in the town that mention the job, photographs of work on named streets and in named villages, a film of a job in progress, and mentions from local suppliers and organisations.

Bond Brickwork in Brighouse shows the method working over time: a site built around named projects and the searches that matter, since 2018, now at the top of Google for the commercial brickwork terms and recommended by AI search. Different trade, same approach.

Should you go after the Leeds searches yourself?

Only if you genuinely work there and can show it. A page for Leeds with no Leeds jobs, photographs or reviews on it is exactly the thin page you are competing against, and it will do to your credibility what theirs does to theirs. If you do work across the county, name the jobs, film them, put them on the page and give it a year.

For most Skipton businesses the better use of the same money is taking every search in Craven first.

Where does AI search come into it?

AI answers lean on the same signals, and they favour clarity over size. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and the rest read pages that say plainly who the business is, what it does and where, and they use reviews and mentions to decide who to name. A Skipton firm with clear pages and honest proof can be the one named for a Skipton question while a bigger Leeds firm is named for Leeds. Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield is a one-van business that is named in the AI answer for female gas engineer Huddersfield, for exactly that reason.

About Halizona

A Yorkshire marketing company with an address in Skipton

Halizona is a Yorkshire marketing company. We help established businesses get found by the right people, give those people reasons to trust them, and win more of the work they actually want. In Skipton we are at 33 Swadford Street, and the wider team works from Halifax.

Websites, SEO, AI search, content, social media, photography, video and marketing strategy all sit with one team here. Search work goes better that way, because the page that needs to rank and the photographs that make it believable get made by the same people.

We have been doing this for approaching 20 years, and today we work with businesses across West Yorkshire and nearby areas, including Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Keighley and Skipton.

Find you.Trust you.Choose you.

Get found by the right people. Give them proof. Make choosing you the easy option.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

Can a Skipton business rank for searches with Yorkshire in them?

In time, for a specialist with proof across the county. Bond Brickwork does. For a general local trade it is a long fight against firms with a decade of links, and the Skipton searches pay back much sooner.

Do reviews really affect rankings?

In the map results, yes: Google names reviews as part of prominence. In the ordinary results the effect is indirect, but a page with reviews on it converts better, which is the point of ranking in the first place.

Want more of the right Skipton customers finding you first?

The answer is rarely more marketing. More often it is the search side of what you already have, set up properly and pointed at the people who are looking for you today.
