SEO Skipton Where to start

How does Google decide which Skipton businesses appear in Maps?

Google ranks the map results on three things it has published itself: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how closely your Business Profile matches what was typed, distance is how far you are from the searcher or the place they named, and prominence is how well known the business is, judged mostly by reviews, links and mentions. For a Skipton business the useful question is which of the three is holding you back, so this guide takes each in turn, then looks at why a profile can be missing altogether and what to change this month.

What does relevance mean for a Skipton Business Profile?

Whether Google can tell that you offer the thing that was searched for. The primary category carries most of the weight, so a plumber listed as Contractor loses to a plumber listed as Plumber. The services list, the description, the photographs and the posts add to it, and so does the website the profile links to, which Google reads for the same words.

Skipton belongs in the description and on the site in plain sentences. A profile for a joiner that never says where the joinery happens leaves Google guessing, and it will guess in favour of a profile that does say.

How does distance work for someone searching from Skipton?

Google measures from the searcher, or from the place they typed. Someone on Sheep Street searching plumber near me is shown plumbers close to Sheep Street. Someone in Leeds searching plumber Skipton is shown plumbers close to Skipton. A business with a Skipton address starts ahead in both, and a service-area business that hides its address is placed by where it is really based as well as the area it serves, so setting the area to the whole of Yorkshire buys nothing.

It is also why a firm in Keighley or Ilkley can rank in Skipton on a quiet search and vanish on a busy one. Distance decides more when there are plenty of relevant profiles to choose from.

What makes one Skipton business more prominent than another?

Reviews, mostly, and then links and mentions. How many reviews, how recent, the rating and the words inside them all count, and a review that names the job and the place, a boiler in Embsay say, tells Google more than five stars and a thank you. Links from other websites to yours, listings on the main directories that agree with each other, and mentions on local sites all add to it, and so does how well the website itself ranks in the ordinary results.

Prominence is the slow one. Reviews arrive one job at a time, so start asking now.

Why is my business not in the map results at all?

Usually one of six things. The profile was never verified. The address is hidden and the business is based outside the area. The primary category is wrong. There is a second, duplicate profile splitting the signals. The profile has been suspended for breaking a rule, often an address that is really a mailbox. Or the website the profile points to says nothing about the service or the town.

Each of those can be checked in an afternoon, and most can be fixed in a week.

  • Never verified
  • Hidden address, based outside Skipton
  • Wrong primary category
  • A duplicate profile
  • Suspended for a rule breach
  • A website that never mentions the service or the town

What can you change this month?

Verify the profile if it is not. Set the primary category to the thing you most want to be found for and add the rest as secondary. Fill in every service, write a description that says Skipton, and upload your own photographs of real jobs. Put the address on the website and make it match the profile to the letter. Then ask every customer for a review, and ask them to mention the job and the village.

After that, build the pages behind it, one per service, because the profile and the site rank together. None of it is quick and all of it compounds.

Does the map pack feed AI search as well?

Yes. Google’s AI answers draw on Business Profile data and reviews when someone asks for a recommendation, and the other assistants lean on the same public listings and the same reviews. A profile that is complete, reviewed and backed by a website that agrees with it is the foundation for being named, in the map results and in the answer above them.

Our Skipton work comes first and is still in progress. The two alongside it show what search work looks like once it has had years to run.

High Corn Mill

Business
One of Skipton’s landmark buildings, a historic mill in the middle of town that people know by name.
Problem
The website and the film have to show the building the way the town sees it, which means making them here, on site, with the building in shot.
Work
Website, drone filming and video, with the flying done over Skipton by our own team. The work is under way.

In progress. We are working with High Corn Mill now, and the results line gets written when there is one to write.

RB Electrical

Business
An electrical contractor in Halifax, R.B Electrical (Halifax) Limited, covering commercial and domestic work and OZEV approved EV charging installs.
Problem
The searches that bring work in are specific, an EV charger fitted, a commercial rewire, and a single general page could not rank for any of them.
Work
Brand, website, SEO, content and the marketing since. Each service has a page of its own with enough on it to rank on its own, EV charging included.

Around two organic leads a week for five years, which works out at roughly a 5:1 return on what the work costs.

About Halizona

A Yorkshire marketing company with an address in Skipton

Halizona is a Yorkshire marketing company. We help established businesses get found by the right people, give those people reasons to trust them, and win more of the work they actually want. In Skipton we are at 33 Swadford Street, and the wider team works from Halifax.

Websites, SEO, AI search, content, social media, photography, video and marketing strategy all sit with one team here. Search work goes better that way, because the page that needs to rank and the photographs that make it believable get made by the same people.

We have been doing this for approaching 20 years, and today we work with businesses across West Yorkshire and nearby areas, including Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Keighley and Skipton.

Find you.Trust you.Choose you.

Get found by the right people. Give them proof. Make choosing you the easy option.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

Does a virtual office address get me into the Skipton map results?

No, and it can cost you the profile you already have. Google says a rented mailing address that nobody works from is not eligible, and profiles built on one get suspended.

Can Halizona manage our Business Profile?

Yes, as part of the SEO work, because the profile, the website and the reviews rank together.

Want more of the right Skipton customers finding you first?

The answer is rarely more marketing. More often it is the search side of what you already have, set up properly and pointed at the people who are looking for you today.
