SEO Skipton Where to start

How do I rank my business in Skipton?

Give Google a page for each thing you do with Skipton on it, a complete Google Business Profile, and evidence that the work really happens here. That is the whole method, and it works because most Skipton searches have nobody building a page to win them. What follows is what people in the town actually type, why one page per service beats a general one, how much the map results depend on your profile, what counts as local proof, and how long it takes.

What do people in Skipton actually type into Google?

The service, then the town: plumber Skipton, accountant Skipton, dog groomer Skipton, and the same again with near me on the end from a phone. Very few people type the name of a business they have never heard of, and hardly anyone types the wording on your homepage. The searches are small in number, tens a month for most trades, but every one of them is a person in the town who wants the thing you sell.

Search Console will show you the exact phrases your site already appears for, and it is free. Half an hour in there tells you more than any keyword tool, because the tools undercount small towns badly.

Does my website need a separate page for each service?

Yes, if you want to rank for more than one thing. Google ranks pages, and a page called Services that gives eight jobs a paragraph each ranks for none of them. RB Electrical in Halifax is the clearest example we have: each service, EV charging among them, got a page of its own with enough on it to stand alone, and the enquiries have averaged around two a week for five years.

For a Skipton firm that means a page per service, each one saying what the job involves, where you do it, what it tends to cost and what you have done before. Photographs of your own work, with the place named, do more than any paragraph.

How much does Google Business Profile matter in Skipton?

For most Skipton searches it matters more than the website, because the three map results sit above everything else and take the first tap on a phone. The profile is your shop window there. It needs the right primary category, every service listed, real photographs, a description that says Skipton, and reviews arriving steadily with the job and the place mentioned in them.

It also needs a website behind it that agrees with it. Google reads the site the profile links to, so a profile that says plumber and a homepage that says nothing about plumbing in Skipton pull against each other.

What proof does Google want that you are a Skipton business?

The same proof a customer wants. Your address on the site, matching the profile and the directories. Jobs named by street or village, with photographs. Reviews from people in Embsay, Gargrave and Cross Hills that say so. Mentions on local websites, whether that is a supplier, a club you sponsor or an organisation you belong to.

None of that is a trick. It is what being a Skipton business looks like from the outside, written down where Google can read it.

  • Address on the website and the profile, matching exactly
  • Named local jobs with your own photographs
  • Reviews that mention the town or the village
  • Consistent listings on the main directories
  • Mentions from local organisations and suppliers

How long does it take to rank in Skipton?

A few weeks to a few months for a town search with no purpose-built rival page, which describes most of them. The map results usually move first. Terms that name the wider area, Craven, the Dales, North Yorkshire, take longer because bigger firms have older pages there, and a year is a fair estimate for those.

Nobody can promise a position, and we will not. What we can say is that in a small town the gap between doing this properly and doing nothing is unusually wide, and it closes quickly once the work is in.

What would Halizona do first?

Read the live results for your searches, look at Search Console and your profile, and tell you the two things worth fixing. Then it is the pages, the profile and the proof, in that order. We are on Swadford Street, so seeing the job and photographing it is part of the work, and the drone comes out where it helps, as it has for High Corn Mill.

What this looks like for a real business

Our Skipton work comes first and is still in progress. The two alongside it show what search work looks like once it has had years to run.

High Corn Mill

Business
One of Skipton’s landmark buildings, a historic mill in the middle of town that people know by name.
Problem
The website and the film have to show the building the way the town sees it, which means making them here, on site, with the building in shot.
Work
Website, drone filming and video, with the flying done over Skipton by our own team. The work is under way.

In progress. We are working with High Corn Mill now, and the results line gets written when there is one to write.

RB Electrical

Business
An electrical contractor in Halifax, R.B Electrical (Halifax) Limited, covering commercial and domestic work and OZEV approved EV charging installs.
Problem
The searches that bring work in are specific, an EV charger fitted, a commercial rewire, and a single general page could not rank for any of them.
Work
Brand, website, SEO, content and the marketing since. Each service has a page of its own with enough on it to rank on its own, EV charging included.

Around two organic leads a week for five years, which works out at roughly a 5:1 return on what the work costs.

Common questions

Questions people ask about this

Can a one-page website rank in Skipton?

For one search, possibly. For several services, no, because each needs a page that Google can rank on its own.

Do I need a Skipton address to rank?

For the map results it helps a great deal, since distance is one of the three things Google weighs. For the ordinary results a service-area business can rank fine with the town named clearly on the right pages.

Want more of the right Skipton customers finding you first?

The answer is rarely more marketing. More often it is the search side of what you already have, set up properly and pointed at the people who are looking for you today.
